Services for C.L. Kenneth Matthews, 83, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, in the Roberts Funeral Home Chapel, with Les Hacker officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Healdton.
Born Feb. 19, 1930, in Wilson, to the late Carl and Lela (Avery) Matthews, C.L. passed away at Ardmore Veterans Center Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013.
C.L. and LaVada Jo Poteet were married Nov. 20, 1951, in Gainsville Texas. He was a butcher for Henry Hall's Grocery. They were married three months when he received his call for the service in the U.S. Army. After basic training, he was stationed in Germany for 18 months. When his duty in the Army was over, he came back to work at Hall's Grocery. Later, he went to work for Sutherland's Well Service and retired after 35 years of service. He loved working in his garden, mowing his lawn and spoiling his granddaughters. Not being one to sit home, after retiring, he went to work part-time for Travis Phillips at Vacco in Lone Grove, where he worked for four years.
They lived in Healdton for 57 years, and raised four children there. With his failing health, they moved to Lone Grove to be closer to his doctors.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lavada,; sister, Jo Roberts and her husband, Bill; brother, Earnest Matthews and his wife, Joann.
C.L. is survived by three sons, Kenneth Matthews of Ardmore, Carl Matthews (Scott) of West Fork, Ark., and Jeffery Matthews (Pam), Lone Grove; one daughter, Iris Adams (David), Irvington, Ala.; six granddaughters, Jennifer Williams, Stephanie Adams, Amy Adams, Lindsey Matthews, Samantha Hiser and Emily Gibson; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Wayne Matthews and wife, Bernita, Healdton; and one sister, Gracie Clark, Ardmore.
