The Plainview and Ardmore wrestling teams faced stiff competition over the weekend at te Cushing High School tournament. Eight of the top 10 teams in Class 4A and the top team in Class 3A were in attendance. Plainview finished third as a team with 154 points, its best finish at the prestigious tournament. “It was a lot like the Sugar Bowl when Oklahoma were the only ones that thought they had a chance against Alabama,” Plainview coach Rocky Atencio said. Ardmore was 23rd out of 31 teams with 35 points. Perry won the tournament with 199 points and Cushing was second with 179.5. Plainview's Stephen West won the tournament at 120 pounds by decision, 3-1, over Cody Lambert from Cascia. West breezed through the first two round with wins by fall before taking two wins by decision to reach the finals. The Indians also brought home the gold medal at 220 pounds. Cameron Hanan won his first two matches by fall before a 7-2 decision win over Ben Ervin from Weatherford to reach the final. Hanan beat Bo Montiez from Perry by fall to win the tournament. The Plainview duo of Darius Clark and Bryce Smith both lost at 106 pounds in the first round and in the loser's bracket. At 113 pounds, Plainview's Zach Atencio finished third against tough competition. Atencio won two matches by fall to reach the semifinals. Maddie Roney from Kingfisher defeated Atencio by decision 9-7 with a late charge after the two were tied in the last minute of the match. Atencio moved to the loser's bracket and beat Cushing's Austin Walsh to reach the third place bout. He met Levi Youngwolf from Pawhuska and beat him for the second time by decision, 6-3, to claim third. Kagan Wallis also wrestled at 113 pounds losing by fall in his first match. Wallis moved on to win two matches by fall in the loser's bracket before losing to Cushing's Austin Walsh by fall. Keion Dangerfield from Ardmore lost his first round match to Braden Visnieki from Harrah by fall. Dangerfield lost his loser's bracket match by fall. Ardmore's Lamir Archibald won his first round match over Bristow's Jackson Lancaster by fall and moved on to face semifinalist Burden, losing by fall. Archiblad beat Cleveland's Chandler Kauffman by fall and finished one match short of a chance to place with a loss to Daniel Monroe from Harrah by fall. Ardmore's Quintarius Horton was the lone local wrestler to compete at 126 pounds. He lost in his opening match to Carson Rinaldi from Harrah by decision, 3-1. Against Marlow's Brandon Green, Horton won by fall but lost in his second loser's bracket match. Garrett Willis from Plainview won three hard fought matches by decision at 132 pounds to advance to the final against Blake Avery from Perry. Avery won by a 7-4 decision. Tyler Owens from Plainview and Deveryan Cook from Ardmore both lost first round matches. Owens also lost in the loser's bracket, but Cook beat Nathan Ryan from Harrah by fall before losing to Daniel Anthamatten from Cascia in his next match. Preston McCathern won his first round match at 138 pounds but fell short in a 3-2 decision against Chance Blount from Sallisaw in his next match. Ardmore's Ryan Riley lost by fall in his first round match. Riley lost his first round match in the loser's bracket and McCathern beat Bristow's Trent Smith by 11-7 decision and Jake Ornder from Vinta by fall before losing a 7-2 decision to Perry's Damian Tucker. Tanner O'Neal wrestled at 145 pounds for the Indians. He won his first match by fall but struggled against Newkirk's Bleau Stopp in a 15-1 decision loss. O'Neal moved on to beat Miguel Rosendo by 12-5 decision in the first round of the loser's bracket but was beaten by fall in the next round. Plainview's Jordan Rickets lost to Justin Dunn from Bartlesville by 17-2 decision in the first round at 152 pounds. Rickets then lost by fall in the loser's bracket. Ardmore's Jacob Montgomery lost his first round match, but won by fall over Alex Delgado from Weatherford and Patrick Seward from Comanche in the loser's bracket. Barden Hauge from Cascia edged Montgomery, 4-2, in the next round. Ruston Duke reached the quarterfinals at 160 pounds with a win by decision, 15-11, over Tyler Logan from Bristow. Michael Hamilton from Bartlesville defeated Duke by fall in the quarterfinals. Duke lost by fall in his first loser's bracket match. Josh Wells won his first match at 170 pounds by fall but was beaten by Cale Wilson from Sallisaw by fall. Wilson went on to place second. Wells won two matches by decision in the loser's bracket before an 8-4 decision loss to Zalin Edwards from Pawhuska. Plainview's Kyle Lindsay won two matches at a 182 pounds to reach the quarterfinals. He lost to John Gruenwald from Sperry by fall and moved on to lose again by fall in the loser's bracket. Deangello Mitchell from Ardmore lost his two matches by close decision. Austin Barrick from Plainview defeated Jason Loafman from Comanche by fall before losing to Jadon Davenport by fall. Davenport went on to win the tournament. Barrick beat Cleveland's Brett Miller by fall but lost by 12-1 decision to Luke Smith in the loser's bracket. At 285 pounds, Plainview's Darian Fagan finished sixth. Fagan beat Cody Haire from Clare by 3-2 decision and lost to Nathan Martin from Cascia 6-2. Fagan won his first loser's bracket match by fall and took a decision against Jacob Ethridge from Bristow in his next match. Wagoner's Derek Marshal beat Fagan by 5-1 decision to send him to the fifth place match. Mac Ramsey from Cushing beat Fagan by fall. Ardmore's Max Benson and Darius Lawson each won first round matches by fall at 285 pounds. Jose Cuevas from Weatherford beat Benson in the second round by 5-0 decision and Grant Moore from Pawhuska beat Lawson in the second round by fall. Lawson beat Jet Reeves from Bartlesville by fall in his first loser's round match but lost to Nathan Martin from Cascia in the next match. Trey Hobbs from Newkirk beat Benson by 9-3 decision in the loser's bracket.
