  • The Big 12 Conference announced its Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients for the 2013 fall season and Oklahoma’s Gabe Ikard and Sallie McLaurin claimed the honor for their respective sports. The two Sooner student-athletes were selected as the award-winners for their sports based on a vote of each sport’s head coaching group.

Ikard, a senior center for the OU football team from Oklahoma City, has taken home several academic awards throughout the season, including the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year as well as earning a spot on the 2013 Academic All-America Team and recipient of the 2013 Lee Roy Selmon Spirit Award. He is the first OU football student-athlete in program history to be named Academic All-America of the Year and the first to be named a three-time Academic All-American. A two-time All-Big 12 honoree, Ikard is also a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award and a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, honoring the top scholar-athlete in the nation. He was previously honored with the 2013 National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete Award.

Ikard graduated in May 2013 with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and bachelor’s degree in multidisciplinary studies with a biological sciences theme and is currently pursuing a second undergraduate degree from OU.

McLaurin, an outside hitter for the Sooner volleyball team from Midwest City, is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 member. She has maintained a 3.73 GPA as she works towards a degree in health and exercise science. McLaurin was named to both the Capital One All-America First Team and Capital One All-District Team. For her efforts on the court, she was named AVCA All-America Second Team and All-Big 12 First Team.
