In earlier girls action, Washington defeated Idabel 69-42. Also, Comanche beat Marlow 43-37, and Colbert defeated Bristow 45-42. Lone Grove will play Colbert tonight at 7 p.m. in the tournament semifinals. Lone Grove (3-3) spotted Walters (5-3) the first five points, but finished the opening period on a 13-0 run. Sophomore Hannah Howard scored nine of her game-high 18 points in the opening period to help the Lady Longhorns establish a lead. Walters struggled all night against the tough defense employed by Lone Grove. The Lady Longhorns forced the Lady Blue Devils into 22 turnovers, 14 of which came from Lone Grove steals. Walters outscored the Lady Longhorns 11-7 in the second period, and Lone Grove took a 20-16 lead into halftime. “We’re not very tall, but we were quicker than they were tonight,” Lone Grove coach Jeff Word said. “We got big scoring games from Hannah and Megan (Garrison), and we have to have that in order for us to be successful. All the girls played great defense tonight, and we never let them get too close.” With both defenses pressuring the ball in the third, the teams scored seven apiece, and Lone Grove headed to the fourth with a 27-23 lead. In the final eight minutes, the Lady Blue Devils continued to press. The Lady Longhorns hit four from the floor in the fourth, but they drained 11 of 14 from the charity stripe to maintain a solid advantage. “The girls played with a sense of urgency tonight, and they do very well when they play like that,” Word said. “We have a tough game on Friday with Colbert. So I am hoping this feeling stays with us. It was a great fourth period for us that really brought the win home. Free throw shooting and great defense got the job done tonight.” Lone Grove hit 16 of 35 (46 percent ) from the floor to 41 percent (12 of 29) for Walters. At the line, however, the Lady Longhorns finished 13 of 18 (72 percent) to the Lady Blue Devils’ 6 of 8 (75 percent). The Lady Longhorns had a 17-11 overall rebounding edge with a 10-5 advantage on the offensive glass. Lone Grove had a 14-8 advantage in second chance points. Lone Grove finished with a 22-11 advantage in the fourth to pull away. Garrison finished with 10 points, and Haley McCutchen chipped in seven points for Lone Grove. Walters was led in scoring by Hannah High’s 13 points.
