Adults can get their hands dirty and their creativity flowing in upcoming pottery classes to be taught by artist-in-residence Steven Phillips in the Goddard Center's Art Studios.
Adults can choose from the following classes:
- Wheel Throwing Pottery for Beginners and Intermediates on Monday evenings
- Pottery Fundamentals for Beginners and Intermediates on Wednesday afternoons
- Pottery Fundamentals for Beginners and Intermediates on Thursday evenings
All classes are $125, and all materials and firings are included.
Originally from Louisiana, Phillips has been teaching pottery classes at the Goddard Art Studios since 2002. In 1994, he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics with a minor in painting at the University of North Texas. He's taught on the university level as well as worked as a potter for many years. Phillips is also active in exhibitions and demonstrations of his craft.
Phillips has taught adults with a variety of skills in clay from a beginning to an advanced level. When teaching pottery classes, he prefers the smaller classroom setting.
"This promotes a more one-on-one type of experience for the students," Phillips says. "Students learn to make decisions about a number of procedures in a given project from design to basic size and shape."
Seating is limited in these classes. To enroll, call the Goddard Center at (580) 226-0909. Classes are filled on a first come-first served basis. A 50 percent deposit is required at time of registration. Classes will be held in the Center's Art Studios building located at 425 1st Ave. SW. Funding is provided in part by the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
