George E. Lewis Jr. was born on Dec. 7, 1930, in Auburn, N.Y., and died peacefully on Feb. 14, 2014, in Oklahoma City. A memorial service honoring George and celebrating his life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014, in The Chapel at Griffin-Hillcrest, Ardmore.

A graduate of Montgomery College, George’s job as an electrical engineer moved him from Auburn, N.Y., to Oklahoma City in 1979, and in 1993, he and Joyce retired to Ardmore, where they could enjoy life near the lake and close proximity to their grown children. An avid sports fan, he loved watching Oklahoma City Thunder basketball and the University of Oklahoma Sooners football games. George was gifted with a witty and playful spirit that will be missed by those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and George Lewis Sr.; his sister, Helen McAllister; his wonderful son, George Lewis III; and his beautiful wife, Mary “Joyce,” who must have wanted him with her for Valentine’s Day.

He is survived by his daughter, Leslie Lewis, of Oklahoma City, who lovingly cared for him after Joyce’s passing; son and daughter-in-law Chris and April Lewis of Dallas; son and daughter-in-law David and Mary Lewis of Ardmore; sister Margaret Wall of Auburn, N.Y.; brother and sister-in-law David and Bobbie Lewis of Easton, Pa.; and granddaughters Mary Gillespie of Oklahoma City and Danielle Lewis of Fort Worth. There are also numerous step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him dearly.

Special thanks to the multitude of doctors, nurses and caregivers who showed him kindness and compassion during the final stage of his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate consideration of a donation to the American Cancer Society.
