An early morning car thief only got to drive his purloined ride for minutes Monday before being nabbed by Ardmore police.
Capt. Eric Hamblin, Ardmore Police Department, said Kenneth Welch, 33, was taken into custody following a brief foot chase in the 1000 block of A Street SE. He was booked into the Carter County Detention Center to await formal charges.
Hamblin said the theft occurred in the 400 block of Locust Street about 6 a.m., when the victim went outside to “warm up” his car.
“He said a male suspect, brandishing what he thought was a knife, approached him and stole the car,” Hamblin said.
Within minutes Ardmore patrol officers found the car. When Welch realized officers had spotted him he stopped the car but instead of giving up he attempted to flee on foot. A block later, he was in custody, along with the screw driver he had used as a weapon in the theft.
By Monday afternoon Welch had been formally charged by the district attorney’s office with first degree robbery. He made an initial appearance in district court, where bond was set at $80,000. Welch remains detained pending the posting of bond and/or the outcome of the case.
