Oklahoma baseball is at home for a non-conference series against CSU Bakersfield at L. Dale Mitchell Park this weekend. The series opener is at 6:00 p.m. today.
Oklahoma is 20-10 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12. Over the last six games, the Sooners are 2-4 and averaging just 1.25 runs per game. Junior Mac James maintains a .400 batting average, while sophomore left fielder Hunter Haley is second on the team at .345 and leads the team in both runs and RBI and 29 and 25. The OU pitching staff owns a collective 3.16 earned run average. Sophomore right-hander Ralph Garza Jr. leads the team in both wins and saves at 4-0 and five. He also owns a 0.77 ERA in 23.1 innings to go with 21 strikeouts. Redshirt-sophomore LHP Adam Choplickis 3-1 with a 3.15 ERA, best among starters, and 37 strikeouts in 40 innings.
Promotions: It’s “Little League Weekend” at L. Dale Mitchell Park. On Friday night, fans can stick around following the game for a toss under the lights and on Sunday kids can run the bases. The freshman class will also be available for autographs following Saturday’s game.
1st - On the Air
Veteran OU broadcasters Toby Rowland (play-by-play) and Chris Plank (sideline) will call the action on KREF Sports Talk 1400 AM and 98.5 FM. Each game will be televised through Sooner Sports TV on FOX College Sports-Central as well as FSSW+ on Saturday with Chad McKee (p-b-p) and 10-year MLB veteran Jay Payton (color) on the call.
2nd - Bedlam in Norman
The Sooners matched a season-low for hits with three against Oklahoma State on Tuesday night. Redshirt-junior RHP Robert Tasin (2-2) took the loss in a 4.1-inning start. He surrendered two solo home runs in the second, but struck out a career-high seven batters. Oklahoma set a season-high with 1,941 in attendance in the first Bedlam game in Norman since 2011.
3rd - Scouting the Roadrunners
CSU Bakersfield is 11-16 overall after a 1-2 weekend at Utah Valley and a 6-1 loss to No. 5 Cal Poly on Tuesday. Second baseman Max Carterleads the way with a .358 batting average, while right fielder Chance Gusbeth has driven in a team-high 18 runs to support a .284 average. Left-hander Taylor Aikenhead (4-3) will start for the Roadrunners on Friday night. He holds a 2.91 ERA and has struck out 41 batters across 46.1 innings pitched. The one common opponent the two teams have played is Gonzaga, who Bakersfield fell to, 4-3.
4th - Shave for the Brave
On Thursday, Oklahoma held its “Shave for the Brave” event to join the fight against childhood cancer. The Sooners, with a goal of $20,000, raised over $22,000 through the Vs. Cancer Foundation to raise money for cancer research. Half of the money donated will be dedicated to the OU Children’s Hospital. The event also served as an opportunity for the Sooners in their countdown to 19 Ways.
5th - Putting the Ball in Play
The Sooners strike out at the second lowest rate in the Big 12 at 4.63 per game; behind Kansas at 4.45. Mac James has struck out just three times and ranks seventh in the nation in “Toughest to Strikeout” at 34 at-bats per strikeout.
6th - In the Polls
Oklahoma entered 2014 ranked No. 28 in the NCBWA preseason poll. The Sooners also received 66 votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll, landing three spots outside of the Top 25. OU finished 2013 ranked No. 17 by the coaches. The Sooners are currently ranked No. 29 by NCBWA, No. 30 by Collegiate Baseball News and sit one spot out of the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll Top-25.
7th - Lineup on Shuffle
Oklahoma did not repeat a lineup until the 14th game of the season. The Sooners have used 21 different starting lineups. Sophomore center fielderCraig Aikin was the only player to start each of the first 27 games at the same position.
8th - Return to the Bigs
Former Sooner Jason Bartlett made the Minnesota Twins out of spring training as a reserve infielder. The nine-year MLB veteran was out of baseball in 2013 and last played in the majors in 2012 for the San Diego Padres, but was limited due to a sprained right knee. Bartlett is one of three former Sooners starting 2014 in MLB along with Greg Dobbs (MIA) and Garrett Richards (LAA).
