  • A bill that will increase transparency in oilfield waste was signed into law Monday.
Senate Bill 1418 was written by Sen. Frank Simpson, R-Ardmore. It will direct the Corporation Commission to require the disposal of oilfield waste in a commercial waste disposal site to include records of who generated it, the source and volume of waste and where it was disposed.
“In looking at oilfield waste disposal, we found a lack of consistent reporting and documentation between state agencies,” Simpson said. “This bill will implement the ‘best business practices’ and ensure that the financial interest of Oklahoma taxpayers is protected.”
Rep. Pat Ownbey, R-Ardmore, sponsored the bill in the House and presented arguments for its passage.
“The oil and gas industry is critical to Oklahoma, but it should have to comply with the same waste reporting requirements as any other industry,” he said. “This legislation ensures that there is a public record of how that waste is disposed for any Oklahoman to review if they have concerns.”
