  • Funeral services for Mary C. Smith will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Davis, with the Rev. George Gilland officiating. Interment will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery at Davis.
    Mary Smith, 93, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014, in Knoxville, Tenn. She was born north of Fort Arbuckle on Dec. 16, 1920, to David Brown and Lottie (Johnston) Cone.
    Mary grew up west of Davis as a child and went to Woodland School and Davis School until the 11th grade. She married the love of her life, Ross “Jimmy” Smith Jr., on Dec. 9, 1939, in Coalgate. Mary and Ross Jr. met at a church function when she was 16. They started courting and married when she was 18. They lived near his parents’ home to help his father with farming. Ross Jr. went into dairy work and sold milk to the cheese factory in Sulphur.
    During World War II, they moved to Oklahoma City where Ross worked for Douglas Aircraft in the sheet metal department. After the war, Mary and Ross came back to their hometown and later purchased a farm west of Davis. They were married for 67 years until Ross’ death in 2006. Mary and Ross farmed and ranched west of Davis for more than 58 years before moving to Davis in 1996. Mary moved to Knoxville, Tenn., in 2011 to be near her daughter and family.
    Mary was an active member of the Davis Methodist Church for 65 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher for 17 years and member of the choir for many years. She was a charter member of the Anna Circle of the Women’s Society of Christian Service.
    She was preceded in death by husband Ross “Jimmy” Smith Jr., son James Everett Smith, daughter Janice Jo Smith, parents David and Lottie Cone, brothers Glen, Alfred and James “Bud” Cone, sister Thelma Mabry and nephew Glen “Buck” Cone.
    Mary is survived by daughter Sue Petrie and husband James of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandsons Chris Smith of Edmond, Dr. Mark Smith and wife Traci of Springfield, Mo., Jay Guinn and wife Michelle of Conroe, Texas, and Toby Scott Guinn of Sarasota, Fla.; granddaughter Jami Moseley and husband Bill of Fort Collins, Colo.; great-grandchildren Parker and Aubrey Smith of Edmond, Mason and Morgan Guinn of Conroe, Texas, and William and Katie Moseley of Fort Collins, Colo.; nephews Dr. Glenn Cunningham and wife Camille of Houston, Phil Cunningham of Kihei, Hawaii, Kenneth Smith and wife Carol of Paoli, and David Cone and wife Laura of Clovis, Calif.; and nieces Brenda Kehrer and husband Miles of Davis, Barbara Maye of Fort Worth, Texas, Wanda Barnes and husband Wes of Antioch, Calif., Debbie Green and husband Roger of Bakersfield, Calif., Teresa Barnett and husband, Craig of Bakersfield, Calif., and Alfreda Worsham and husband Gary of Visalia, Calif. Mary is held in loving remembrance by her son’s widow, Alberta Smith Williams and husband John and their family of Muskogee.
    Page 2 of 2 - Serving as pallbearers will be Chris Smith, Dr. Mark Smith, Jay Guinn, Parker Smith, William Moseley and Mason Guinn.
    Honorary bearers will be Jimmy Salter, Joe Pirkle, Bob Drake, Gene Hester, Gerald Goodson and Bob Johnson.
    The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 this evening at the funeral home.
    Services are entrusted to Hale’s Funeral Home, Davis.
