  • Walter Eugene (Gene) Shrum, 91, of Tishomingo, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at the hospital in Ardmore. He was born Jan. 15, 1924, in Ardmore, to the late William J. Shrum and Alta M. Taylor Shrum.
    Gene was a self-employed contractor until he moved to Anchorage, Alaska and retired after 19 years with the Federal Aviation Administration. He served in the U.S. Air Force from Oct. 27, 1942 to Sept. 7, 1945, with the 71st Troop Carrier Squadron. He received a Distinguish Unit Badge, EAME Service Ribbon, two Purple Hearts, Good Conduct Medal, Air Medal, two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and one Silver Service Star. Gene married Ina Mae Teague in 1974, in Alaska. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
    He is survived by his wife, Ina Shrum of Tishomingo; children Kevin Shrum and wife Iomgene of Ardmore, and Lynann Withers of Tishomingo; three stepsons, Larry Rogers, Ricky Rogers and wife Cheryl of Ardmore, and James Rogers and wife Rita of Mississippi; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister Billie Beasley of Jay; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
    Gene was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Denise; one brother, Willie; and one sister, Opal Love.
    Memorials may be made to the kidney foundation or the cancer foundations.
    Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a family hour from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Watts Funeral Home, Madill.
    Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014, at the Woodberry-Forest Cemetery, Madill. Ron Maxwell will officiate the services.
    Casket bearers are Lou Lewellin, Theron Price, Jim Morgan, Jack Simms and Tommy Crowell.
