Brandon Doughty and Elizabeth Herrs, one week after winning Big 12 Outdoor titles, lead the list of University of Oklahoma student-athletes who have been declared for the NCAA West prelims. That meet will be held May 29-31 in Fayetteville, Ark., and 15 Sooner men will be joined by seven Sooner women in the meet.
The top 48 individual competitors and top 24 relays were in a position to advance to the prelims. Following a week of actions and decisions by coaches across the country, a declared list of entries for the East and West prelims has been announced. Those competitors will then compete in an attempt to finish in the top 12. Those 12 student-athletes will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 11-14.
Herrs has the leading mark in the country in the javelin after winning the conference title last Friday. Her throw of 189-5 set a Big 12 meet record and gave her the top mark in the country by just over two feet. The second ranked entrant is a familiar one as sophomore Avione Allgood has the second best mark by just four inches.
Doughty, who won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Big 12, has the 17th best time in the west prelims with a 8:52.38, a mark he posted at the John Jacobs Invitational on April 19.
Other Sooner student-athletes who are ranked in the top 12 of the events they have been declared for include Abbabiya Simbassa in the 10,000; Hayden McClain, triple jump; Garrett Snow, sixth in the javelin; and Tyler Renton, ninth in the javelin.
