It promises to be a festive week in Madill beginning today, with thousands expected to attend the 2014 Sand Bass Festival.
Groundwork for the event began last fall with a meeting in September. The results are promising with a full slate of performers as well as activities for both young and matured.
“We are trying to have something for everyone,” said Donny Raley, committee chairman. “We don’t want anything that is not family oriented.”
Once again, the main stage will be a huge draw for music fans starting tonight with the King Sandie Talent Show. The top three placers in each category will have the opportunity to perform on the last three nights of the festival, opening for the headlining recording artists.
In an effort to strengthen Tuesday night, organizers have slated traditional favorite The Stars Band from Oklahoma City to perform during a street dance. Rocky & The Bullwinkles will be the opening act.
Wednesday night is Gospel Night, with the Kingston First Baptist Praise Team opening for Shane & Shane.
Thursday night, Logan Russell and the Young Guns will perform, followed by the third-place winners of the talent show. The evening will conclude with recording artist Bryan White making his return to Madill.
Raley said White was at the festival 15 years ago, and was unable to perform on stage because of a storm.
“He volunteered to go to the gazebo and play an acoustic set,” Raley said. “He played for an hour and that is a pretty cool story that people around here remember. There were hundreds of people standing around listening just because he did not want people to walk away and not hear him sing.”
Friday night, recording artist John Berry will perform. Clancy Davis and the second-place winners are slated to open for Berry.
Saturday will feature a full slate of activities, which includes a car show. Raley said highlights will include two special vehicles — Mater and Lightning McQueen, featured in the movie Cars.
That evening, the Chase Sanford Band will perform, along with first-place finishers of the talent show. The festival will conclude with Kevin Fowler hitting the big stage to perform.
