  • In a recent telephone survey of 1,000 American adults 78 percent knew the Fourth of July celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence, while just 8 percent thought it commemorates the ratification of the U.S. Constitution instead.

Knowledge about the holiday is down slightly from 82 percent last year, but is still higher than the 74 percent measured in 2012.

Forty-nine percent accurately recognize that the statement “we are all endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights” as in the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution, but 38 percent thought the phrase appears in the Constitution.

Last July 4th, overwhelming majorities of Americans agreed with the basic tenets of the Declaration of Independence.
