  • GENE AUTRY — On the evening of July 4, 2014, Granny went to her eternal resting place surrounded by family at her home in Gene Autry, Okla.
Granny was born Vivian Durrell Anderson on Dec. 5, 1925, in Woodford, Okla. At an early age, she united with the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She was the fourth child, and the third daughter, of Marie (formerly, Marie Roberts) and Simon Anderson. Granny grew up in Milo and graduated from Tatums High School in 1945.
She moved to Ardmore and lived with her lifelong best friend, second Mom, and older sister, Hildred. There, she met “that boy”, the man who would be her husband for more than 50 years, Charles Howard. They were married on May 17, 1947, in Cooke County, Texas. They shared many years and created many memories in Gene Autry. She joined Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church and served in various capacities throughout the years.
Granny rightfully earned her granny title. She opened her house and heart to all her grandchildren. She spent many hours cooking on holidays to “entice” all her children to come back home and bring the grandchildren to the “country.” Everyone especially enjoyed her turkey and dressing with homemade rolls and plum jelly. Many times she made each person’s favorite dessert. Granny was known throughout the community for her famous, delicious pound cakes. She loved cooking and setting a beautiful table but what she enjoyed most was seeing and being with her family.
She leaves behind her beloved children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Rickie Howard (special friend, Joan Smith); Van Howard (Charlotte) and Laura Ann Jenkins aka Sue Howard (Lionel); grandchildren, Arlandus, Derrick, Valerie, Tacelia, Chevis, Devin, Eric, Erica, Noelle and Roy; and 15 great-grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her dear, dear sister, Hildred Benson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; son, Ronnie; stepson, Charles Harrison; step grandson, Charles T. Harrison; sisters, Ledonia Pickens and LG Jackson; and brothers, Robert and Leon Anderson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Charles and Vivian Howard Scholarship Fund established at the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, 3129 Pleasant Road, P.O. Box 36, Gene Autry, OK 73436.
The family greatly appreciates handwritten/electronic notes, calls and visits.
Services for Granny will be Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Gene Autry.
