Gov. Mary Fallin will address delegates at the 92nd Annual Oklahoma Parent Teacher Association® State Convention to be held at the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel & Convention Center, 6808 South 107th East Avenue on Friday.
The Governor will welcome parents, teachers and administrators from across Oklahoma to the convention and speak about shared concerns and challenges facing education today. Unconfirmed topics may include remarks on Common Core (HB 3393), standardized testing (PASS), the costs associated with repealing Common Core, No Child Left Behind and others. The Governor will speak for 10 to 15 minutes.
After the Governor’s remarks, Oklahoma PTA® President Jeffery Corbett will address the convention and briefly review two compelling resolutions up for adoption at the convention: Assessment/Accountability and Field Testing.
“Oklahoma PTA® is calling for a complete moratorium on policies that force Oklahoma public schools to rely on high-stakes testing,” said Corbett. “A yes vote by Oklahoma PTA® delegates will demand that assessments not be used as determinants in situations such as grade promotion, graduation or teacher evaluations.”
Corbett also notes the Field Testing resolution states that Oklahoma public school children should not be expected to conduct corporate research for profit testing companies. “These tests are being given at our expense with public taxpayer dollars, so that private corporations can turn around and sell their test products back to us at a profit. This is unreasonable and a very important issue to be voted on by Oklahoma PTA® members,” said Corbett.
