  • Evelyn Brown Norwood, 84, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2014, at Ardmore. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014, at The Chapel at Griffin-Hillcrest. Interment to follow in Jehovah Cemetery, Milo.
    Evelyn was born on Jan. 27, 1930, to Lester Brown and Eliza A. (Stevenson) Brown in Woodford, and grew up there. Evelyn was a graduate of the Class of 1947 at Ardmore’s Douglas High School. Evelyn met and married her husband of 31 years, John R. Norwood Sr., at Omaha, Neb.
    The couple moved to Tallahassee, Fla., where they owned and operated a café. They later moved to Columbus, Ga. Evelyn retired from Sears Department Store, and then became a home health aide.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Eliza Brown; husband John R. Norwood Sr.; and daughter Joy B. Norwood.
    Evelyn is survived by her children, two sons, Henry Brown and wife Joyce, and John Norwood, and daughter Jacquelyn R. Ford and husband Antonio, all of Ardmore; two stepsons, Norris Dozier and wife Margaret of Compton, Calif., and Jonathan Norwood and wife Denise of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two brothers, Charles P.R. Brown and wife Lizzie of Milo, and Esco Abrams and wife Evelyn of Clinton; one great-aunt, Hester Woods of Ardmore; grandchildren Larae Brown of Oklahoma City, Shameka Halsted Mays and husband Darrius, and Cleo Ellington, all of Ardmore, Ashley Hardy of Atlanta, Chance Brown of Ada, and Antonio Ford Jr., and Justice Ford, both of Ardmore; great-grandchildren Echelle McGee, Rajani Halsted, Christian Clark and Cayden Clark, all of Ardmore; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, family and friends.
    Serving as pallbearers will be John R. Norwood, Otto Brown, Chance Brown, Keyvon Heard, Braxton Gaines and Cory Green. Honorary bearers will be Antonio Ford Jr. and Henry Brown.
    A visitation will be from 6 to 8 Friday evening, July 25, 2014, at Griffin-Hillcrest, Ardmore.
