Thirty-four agents have graduated from the OSBI Advanced Investigative Academy, including Ardmore native Special Agent Justin Brown.

Agents hired since 2007 attended the six-week-long academy to learn advanced skills in areas such as blood stain pattern analysis, investigative interviewing and advanced interrogation techniques, and crime scene investigations. All agents were CLEET-certified peace officers before being hired at OSBI.

Brown is assigned to the OSBI’s South Central Region. He joins longtime Special Agent David Seals at the bureau’s offices in Ardmore.

Brown, who was an 11-year veteran of the Ardmore Police Department, described the academy as “impressive,” adding, “I felt I learned a lot of really useful information.”

The former APD officer accepted a post with the OSBI in February.

Explaining his decision to leave the municipal department for the state agency, he said, “I had worked in patrol for a number of years when I transferred to investigations (APD Criminal Investigation Division). Although I had enjoyed patrol, it was then that I came to the realization investigations was where my interest really was. When the OSBI had an opening, I realized it was right up my alley and would allow me to investigate criminal cases throughout my career.”

Brown’s goal as the area’s newest special agent is straightforward.

“Basically, my immediate goal is to use what I learned in the academy, as well as throughout my career in law enforcement, to help those agencies requesting the OSBI’s assistance in investigating and solving cases.”

Brown and his family reside in Ardmore.

The recent academy was one the bureau planned to conduct a few years ago. Jessica Brown, OSBI public information officer, said budget constraints prevented those plans to be carried out until this year.

The graduating agents are assigned to regions across the state. In addition, six officers from police departments and sheriff’s offices across the state also graduated from the academy.

Graduation ceremonies were conducted Tuesday at the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics in Oklahoma City.
