  • Ardmore City Schools Superintendent Sonny Bates reported the district had been awarded more than a half million dollars in grant funding by a local foundation at Tuesday’s school board meeting.
The Southern Oklahoma Memorial Foundation awarded the school district $400,000 to continue the school nurse program at five school sites and $150,000 for the implementation of the National Math and Science Comprehensive Advance Placement Program, known by NMSI, at the high school, Bates told board members and district leaders.
The foundation has funded the nursing program in past years and the district reapplied for the grant continuing for the 2014-15 school year, earlier this summer.
“The trustees of the SOMF responded favorable to the district’s application and awarded the grant in the amount of $400,000,” Bates said. “The grant is contingent upon a full-time nurse at Ardmore Middle School and the four elementary schools.
Bates said the school nurses are licensed registered nurses.
All schools have a school nurse on site thanks to the grant. The high school nurse position is paid by the district, Bates said.
At the high school, the NMSI program was launched this school year. The program is aimed at raising student participation in AP classes and boosting student achievement in those rigorous, college-styled classes.
The NMSI program was started in 2007 with the intent to impact public schools by bringing the best practices to science and math education. Supported by major American corporations, the program strives to better educate teachers of AP classes, who transform into more effective teachers in the classroom and better prepare students for academic achievement on AP exams and becoming college-ready.
NMSI has been implemented in 560 schools located in 23 states and is growing. This school year, Ardmore joins the program along with high schools in Ada, Durant and Pauls Valley.
