A late night crash on U.S. Highway 77 claimed the life of 30-year-old Floyd W. Smith Jr. Thursday.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the Ardmore man was behind the wheel of a 2005 Chevrolet SUV about 10:45 p.m. five miles north of Springer. Smith failed to negotiate a curve, sending the SUV off the road. He overcorrected and the vehicle overturned and hit a fence. Smith, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown out of the SUV about 25 feet.
He was taken by ambulance to Mercy Memorial Health Center where he was pronounced dead from massive injuries.
Cody A. Pierce, 27, Ardmore, was identified as a passenger in the SUV. He refused treatment at the scene.
Cause of the crash was listed as unsafe speed on a curve.
MARIETTA — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said three people were injured
Tuesday night in a drunk driving crash on State Highway 32, just 1 1/2 miles
east of Marietta.
Former Ardmore and University of Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham received one of the highest honors in pro football on Tuesday, as he was named to the AFC roster for the Pro Bowl.
Police Chief Danny Cooper said Friday officers were continuing to investigate a Main Street accident that injured two pedestrians Thursday night.
The accident was reported about 7:15 p.m.
Cooper said witnesses told officers a woman, identified only as a 63-year-old Native American, was laying or sitting on the side of the street in the grass (600 block of E. Main Street). A man, identified as a 53-year-old Caucasian, apparently approached her to check on her welfare.
Ardmore Police Department Criminal Investigations Division and the Narcotics Division went to 20 area restaurants for a alcohol beverage selling compliance check Thursday night, nine eateries didn’t pass the test.
Sgt. Ryan Hunnicutt, Ardmore Police Department Public Information Officer, said officers were assisted by Wichita Mountains Prevention Network and area teenagers who went into the restaurants and ordered an alcoholic beverage.
Ardmore police are searching for yet another armed bandit who held up a Wallace Street convenience store about 8 p.m.Wednesday night.
Sgt. Ryan Hunnicutt, Ardmore Police Department Public Information Officer, said this time the robber is described as a white male, 5-feet 6-inches tall, with a very slender build.
“He came into the store with a silver handgun, began yelling at the clerk and took the money bag from the store,” Hunnicutt said.
The robber was last seen fleeing on foot. But a small silver car was also seen leaving the area shortly after the robbery occurred.
“It is not known if the suspect got into the car or not,” Hunnicutt said.

Ardmore police, including members of the SWAT and Crisis Negotiations Unit were able to defuse a possible suicide Wednesday afternoon.
Officers converged on a residence, located in the unit block of 10th Avenue NW, after receiving information concerning a possible suicide.
Sgt. Ryan Hunnicutt, APD Public Information Officer, said officers were able to talk to the man and convince him to surrender. No one was hurt and the man was subsequently taken to the local hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Ardmore police are seeking a second armed robber who held up a convenience store Tuesday night.
But, while this holdup man was not immediately known, he may have inadvertently identified himself.
“Apparently the suspect’s face was visible for a few seconds and we are currently reviewing the video tape for clues as to the suspect’s identity,” said Sgt. Ryan Hunnicutt, Ardmore Police Department Public Information Officer.
