Ardmore, OK —

If you’re putting off renewing the tags on your car, you may be doing yourself more harm than good.

A state Senate bill that became law on July 1 quadrupled the penalty for failing to renew your vehicle registration on time.

As of Wednesday, if a new or used vehicle is not titled and registered within 30 days of the transfer of ownership, excise tax and registration penalties will be assessed at $1 a day, neither penalty to exceed $100.

A similar penalty will be assessed when a vehicle’s registration is not renewed after the last day of the month following the tag expiration date.

Paula Ross, communication director of the Oklahoma Tax Commission, said that 25 cents of every $1 collected in penalties goes directly to the individual tag agencies, with the remaining 75 cents going to the state general revenue fund.
