The Southern Oklahoma Technology Center is hosting a free event on Tuesday aimed at teaching Oklahomans how best to treat and prevent bed sores.
The Skin Care Fair, organized by the Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality, is open to those in or training for the health care profession, as well as caregivers or relatives of patients at risk for bed sores.
The foundation plans demonstrations of skin care techniques from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Medical professionals will put on hands-on demonstrations on skin care using onions, tomatoes, wax paper and even Goldfish crackers to show how fragile human skin can be.
Attendees will learn ways to not only treat bed sores, but prevent them as well. Free materials will be available for attendees to take home.
Bed sores are also known as pressure ulcers. They are painful and can be lethal if not treated properly, according to the foundation.
