New officers will serve for two years.
The meeting included a celebration luncheon and highlights of the past year were featured on a video presentation. Immediate past regent Diane Hamill was voted honorary regent for life and presented with a pin signifying the honor by the chapter.
Leaflets
The Leaflets had their end-of-the-year meeting on April 29. The girls got to make their own beaded-jewelry bracelets and were treated to a pizza party. New officers were announced for the next school year.
Ladies of the Leaf
The Ladies of the Leaf conducted their last meeting on April 21 in the Ardmore Public Library. Georgia Tanner reviewed “Sister Bernadette’s Barking Dog” by Kitty Burns Florey. This book is about sentence diagramming in grammar schools and how the author learned the method in sixth grade from Sister Bernadette.
Florey explores the sentence-diagramming phenomenon and what diagrams of famous writers’ sentences reveal about them. The author also offers up her own common-sense approach to learning and using good grammar.
Ann McMillin reviewed Rafe Esquith’s book “Teach Like Your Hair’s on Fire: The Methods & Madness Inside Room 56.” Esquith is a fifth-grade teacher in a Los Angeles public school. His classroom is Room 56 and is composed of students who are either immigrants or children of immigrants.
Most of the students live in poverty and speak very little English as their first language. Esquith gives teachers and parents the tips, techniques and vision that have made him one of the most celebrated teachers in the world. The author asks his 10-year-old students to “be nice and work hard,” and encourages them to embrace personal codes of behavior.
