Patricia Whitener, chapter manager for the American Red Cross of South Central OK headquartered in Ardmore, said the local chapter is looking for people interested in becoming trained disaster volunteers.

The chapter serves Carter, Johnston, Love, Marshall and Murray counties.

With the Lone Grove tornado and the devastating wildfires earlier this year, along with many other single family disasters (primarily house fires), the agency needs caring, trained volunteers to be able to respond when needed.

“The Red Cross is asking you to give of your time to help those less fortunate,” Whitener said. “We never know when we might be that person in need.”

The agency will be conducting orientation/disaster training on Dec. 7 at the chapter office at 1006 Northwest Boulevard. Classes are available from 9 a.m. to noon or from  5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

All disaster training is free, and the Red Cross requires a background check on all registered volunteers.

Those would like to enroll or who need further information should contact the chapter at (580) 223-6313 or stop by the office.

Those who are part of a group that may be interested in volunteering can have a special training session to fit your schedule.
