Teens 14 to 18 who are looking for a way to serve their community and get a close-up look at the variety of career choices in the field of medicine are being offered the chance to participate in Mercy Memorial Health Center’s summer Volunteen Program.

Shana Hammond of the MMHC marketing and communications department, said the summer of 2010 will mark the 19th year area teens have had the opportunity to participate in the program.

“Junior high and high schools students get a chance to take part in MMHC’s Volunteen program. From June 14 to Aug. 6, participating students may volunteer to serve at least one four-hour shift per week,” she said.

Volunteens are assigned jobs which allow them to rotate through many of the hospital’s departments, including intensive care, information desk, plant maintenance, outpatient surgery and health information management.

Each “slice of hospital life” assignment not only gives teenagers the opportunity to interact with patients and escort family members and guests, but to meet, interact with and learn from local MMHC employees who have chosen a career in the medical field.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for these students,” said Shelly Antuna, MMHC Volunteer Services manager. “Not only do they fulfill a need with the patients, they also learn about the many facets of health care for future career options. This is a great way for teenagers to give back to the community. Parents, too, can be encouraged that their children are experiencing the value of giving and learning.”

Antuna calls the Volunteen experience, “a win-win program for everyone. It’s great for Mercy Memorial, our patients and the teens. It gives them the opportunity to participate in an activity that helps others by simply giving of their time and talents.”

Volunteen Program orientation begins at 10:30 a.m. June 8. Interested teenagers and one of their parents are required to attend the orientation session.
