Ardmore, OK —

Once a month, usually on the last Sunday of the month, Christ Community Church sponsors an “Outreach Block Party” in the commons area at Big 5 Apartment Complex.

Yes, there is a short prayer time, but no one finds themselves being preached to. Instead the outreach is about “booming music, children, laughing, games, friendship and conversation,” according to Becky Maytubby, church spokeswoman.

The project is a take-off on one that members of the church’s youth group and adult sponsors saw in action a few years ago on a trip to the inner city of St. Louis. Once the group came home, Maytubby said grills were put on pickups and the local church’s version of “Outreach Block Party” was born.

The project is ongoing and at times has included outreaches at Pecan Creek Apartments and Chickasaw Hills. But currently, “Outreach Block Party” centers on Big 5 Apartment Complex.

Spurred by an enthusiastic group of about 20 youth and an equal number of adults, the “grilling guys” fire up the grills and start cooking hamburgers and hot dogs. Filling out the menu is exactly what’s expected — all the fixin’s.

While people wait for the grilled magic to reach the buns, there’s music — loud music. And there’s a water slide for children, as well as energetic volleyball games, good conversation and lots of laughter and just plain fun.

After the food is prepared, everyone is encouraged to join the dining line.
“And we go door-to-door and offer food and friendship. That’s it. No preaching,” Maytubby said.

“Outreach Block Party” has obtained tradition status at Christ Community. It’s one Maytubby said continues to flourish and has a bright future as new members of the youth group embrace the project.

“The youth love going to the apartment complex and playing with the children and loving them. The adults enjoy the conversation, friendships and prayer time with various residents.”
