Ardmore, OK —

“Footloose” is the second of three productions for the 2009 season of the Jim and Ida Williams Summer Youth Theatre at The Brass Ring Studio. Nick Gelona, returning from New York City after performing in the off-Broadway show “The New Hopeville Comics,” serves in dual roles as director and choreographer for this musical showcase.

Adapted from the 1984 film of the same name, “Footloose” is the story of Ren McCormack, a spirited young man who is forced to move from Chicago to a small farming town, where he is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school.

What he isn’t prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town’s youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid.

The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. “Footloose” celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

The show is packed with outstanding vocals and energetic choreography. Cast members include Trenton McFatridge, Elizabeth Patterson, Austin Powell, Kala Hensley, William Herndon, Katie Parish, Samantha Reser, Kirstie Currier, Jared Chastain, Barclay Howarth, Lauren Carnahan, Matthew Patrick, Brandon Stahlbush, Zachary Aman, Lauren Sheehy, Nathanael Durbin, Lewis Key, Elaina Ralls, Kaitlyn Haney, Traci Young, Diana Healy, Ashley Houchin, Madolynne Seals, Mary Jo Snyder, Cheyenne Hamm and Karin Cockran.

The show opens at 7 p.m. on Thursday, followed by shows at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and a matinee at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10 and will be available for purchase at the door of The Brass Ring Studio, located at 120 A St. N.E. To ask questions, call The Brass Ring at (580) 226-9278.
