Sunday “The Wired Word” for adults will begin at 8:30 a.m. The subject is the national switch-over from analog to digital television broadcasting, which has been referred to as a conversion.
“Indeed, the response to it (switch-over) bears some similarities to the response to an invitation to spiritual conversion and the resistance to change that God has to overcome in our hearts for us to receive Christ. We are going to look at the matters of spiritual conversion and change,” Frankfurt said.
Discussion will focus on the following questions:
• Is spiritual conversion, what is sometimes called the “new birth,” a one-time event — something that occurs at a particular point in time -— or is it something that happens gradually or in stages?
Explain your answer. Can conversion occur differently in different people?
• From a spiritual point of view, is conversion necessary for everyone? Why or why not?
• What is the goal of spiritual conversion? Does it have to do primarily with one’s eternal destination or with how one spends one’s life in the here and now?
• Why do clear alerts to upcoming changes or even dangers move only some people to take action? Why do some people respond by resistance, dragging their feet, inattention, half-hearted preparations, sticking their heads in the sand or even outright denial?
• Has your view of what spiritual conversion means changed over time? If so, in what ways?
Scriptures used for the discussion include: 2 Kings 5:1-17, Luke 19:1-10, Matthew 18:1-5, Mark 1:1-8, Acts 3:11-26 and Romans 3:21-26.
Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Readings include: 1 Samuel 17: (1a, 4-11, 19-23), 32-49, Psalm 9:9-20, 2 Corinthians 6:1-13 and Mark 4:35-41. Fellowship and coffee follows Mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall. A nursery is available from 8:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
Mass on the Grass will continue on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. through July 8. Following services is a cookout. Everyone should bring their own meat to grill and a side dish to share.
