Academic and honor achievers overflowed the board of education meeting space Monday, extending the time normally allowed for student/organization recognitions.
State champion speech/debate and vocal music students led the parade of honor students with coach Brian Gunter and director Wes Singleton. Gunter’s speech/debate crews earned their fifth consecutive state title recently. Vocal music students added a sweepstakes recognition (the second ever given) and took time to present a selection from their state title performance for the board and a packed library audience.
District, regional and state awards earned by Doug Hansen’s Thundering Herd band were also displayed and Ag-Ed Michael Stuckey distributed programs listing students recognized during the recent Oklahoma FFA convention.
Honorees were:
* Alia McCrite, valedictorian; Trevor Clark, salutatorian
* Kelsie Elmore and Trevor Clark, Students of the Year
* Alia McCrite, Oklahoma Academic All-State; also selected National Merit Scholar
* KallyMay Hunter, State Champion, long jump.
* Terri Wilson, School district Teacher of the Year
Primary business of the board’s agenda centered on renewing the Oklahoma School Insurance Program for property, fleet and professional liability coverage for the coming fiscal year. With building values increased $1,194,075 and content values up $64,143, the insurance premium rose to $76,843.
Traci Massey, Diana Dark, Lisa McKinley and Robin Needham were employed as summer teachers for the driver education and intermediate school programs following an executive session centered on personnel matters. Summer workers will include Kenny Ridley, Tim Beard and Jeremy Turner. The board also accepted resignations of teachers Judy Williford and Becky Willoughby and Amy Hillhouse, a primary assistant.
The board also:
* Denied 12 new open transfers for the 2008-09 school year with no new admissions.
* Approved a $29,993 bid from Wayne Eidson Chevrolet, Sulphur, for a Suburban declared surplus property.
* Appointed Supt. Gary Scott as coordinator for the Title IX...Title II and Age Act.
