The students and teachers of Thackerville Public Schools won’t be getting new facilities any time soon.
Love County voters denied the $5,395,000 bond Tuesday night, with only 57.18 percent of the votes supporting the bond. A super majority of 60 percent is needed to pass bonds.
Of the 383 votes cast in the election, 219 were in favor of the bond and 164 were against; 230 votes in favor would have been a super majority.
Despite the outcome, Thackerville Superintendent David Herron thanked those who came out to vote in favor of the bond.
“We just have to go back to the drawing board now,” he said.
The bond would have paid for a new elementary building, gymnasium and land for both. The bond differed from the failed April 8 bond, with that bond asking for $4,645,000 for a new high school building and gym. The school district was able to ask for more money through less millage because the assessed value of the district increased. The tax burden would have been $2.72 per $100 in property taxes.
Herron said he would have to assess the outcome with the school board before making any definite further plans, but this vote won’t be the end of the effort.
“We’re not going to give up, because you’ve got to do what’s best for the kids,” Herron said.
Only 20 percent of Love County’s 1,899 voters cast a ballot in the election.
