The Goddard Center in Ardmore presents Beth Wood in concert on Nov. 20.
The one-night-only performance is part of the center’s acoustic performance series. Wood will be accompanied by Roland Elbert, one of the most sought-after pianists in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
“There must be something in the water.” That’s the inevitable phrase Wood hears anytime she talks about growing up in Lubbock, a high-plains Texas town with a uniquely rich musical heritage.
It was in Lubbock that she began her musical journey. Her family demonstrated extreme patience as they supported her classical studies in piano, violin, harp and voice.
With grandiose dreams of becoming a musician, she left west Texas to study voice and piano at Brevard College in North Carolina. Woods later moved to Austin, Texas, where she earned her degree in literature and picked up her first guitar.
Inspired by an electric moment at a Rickie Lee Jones concert, Woods threw caution and her day job to the wind to become a full-time musician. Twelve years, thousand of shows, seven albums, three cars and numerous awards later, she has never looked back.
The Washington Post said, “Beth Wood is a musical triple-threat — a thoughtful songwriter and talented multi-instrumentalist with a supple, soulful voice.”
Pianist Roland Elbert graduated from the University of North Texas with bachelors’ and masters’ degrees in music composition and a minor in piano.
As a freelance performer, he works both in live events and in the studio. As a player, writer and arranger, he has contributed to countess recordings of jingles and songs in many different styles.
His music on television and radio includes jingles for American Airlines, Cadillac, Doritos, Neiman-Marcus, Coors and many others.
