Dickson’s Emily Gilbert had a game-high 24 points, including 7 of 8 from the line down the stretch to help the Comets defeat Plainview 59-54 Tuesday night.

It was a key Lake Country Conference game for both teams. Dickson improved to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Indians fell to 10-8 and 2-3.

Dickson moved to an 18-9 lead after the opening period with the strength of their inside shooting. Center Katy Custer and forward Desirae Allen each hit two shot in the paint, and Jazmin Mills knocked down a 3-pointer to help the Comets’ opening surge.

Plainview rallied in the second period to pull to within three at halftime. Two 3-point buckets by Jourdan Weatherford, an inside jumper by Taryn Callender, and two from the line by C.J. Hornback brough the Indians back. Defensively, Plainview allowed Dickson just two field goals in the period, both by Gilbert. By halftime, the Indians trailed 22-19.

“We dug ourselves into a hole in the first period, and we spent the rest of the game trying to come back,” Plainview coach Andy Bloodworth said. “We didn’t block out well on the boards in the first period, but as the game wore on, we started taking more pride in that phase of our game. I was particularly proud of the way our team pulled together and came back after being down so far early on.”

Right out of the break, the Comets got 3-point goals from Ashley Huhman, Allen and a long 2-pointer from Gilbert to push their lead to 30-19. Plainview managed to cut the lead to three, but a 3-point buzzer-beater by Huhman gave Dickson a 37-30 lead heading to the fourth.

Five players fouled out of the game as every possession became precious down the stretch. Plainview managed to trim the Dickson lead to three points late, but the Comets knocked down enough free throws to maintain their margin.

“Emily had a great game tonight, and she really came through for us in the fourth from the free-throw line. And those two 3-pointers by Ashley in the third helped change momentum in our favor,” Dickson coach Ron Dwyer said. “We try and play at a fast pace, and sometimes that hurts us because we turn the ball over a lot. But so far we have been able to overcome that issue.

“This is a rivalry game, and we expected a great game tonight.”

Huhman had 11 points, including three 3-pointers for the Comets. Custer had eight points and nine boards.

Kenzie Hunt paced the Indians with 20 points. Hornback had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Weatherford chipped in 10 points.
