Hello there ladies and gentlemen. How has everyone been lately? It’s great to be able to talk to you guys again. I’ve been so busy that I haven’t been able to sit down and start to write something. I’m just glad that this week I am able to. First off I am happy to announce that I am expecting a new geek to join the family in March 2010.
There’s a lot to get caught up on. Let’s see we’ve got the Playstation 3 price cut, my thoughts on G.I. Joe and a couple of the comics I’m reading along with some game news.
First off let me just say that I am extremely excited about the Playstation 3 price cut. They are now $299 and the new Slim Playstation 3 is coming out September 1. I cannot wait for October to come around. That’s my planned month to get another Playstation 3. That is if everything pans out so that I can. I feel left out of the loop without a console to play. Definitely looking forward to the following months there after as well.
I have been trying to keep up to date with some of the newest comics coming out, but there are so many good ones that it is hard to choose which ones to read. Anyway, I recently made a trip to Oklahoma City to take my son to the OKC Zoo for his birthday and decided to stop by a couple of comic book stores. I bought Flash: Rebirth #1 by writer Geoff Johns and artist Ethan Van Sciver, and Destroyer #1 by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Cory Walker.
FLASH: REBIRTH
Flash: Rebirth is great. The guys behind the Green Lanter: Rebirth storyline are at it again but this time it’s the Flash’s turn. They are bringing back Barry Allen. Issue number one starts off slow with Flash and Green Lantern walking and talking and bringing everything into play, but by the end it is off and running (no pun intended). I cannot wait to get the rest of the story. I looked for some issues here in town and could not find any. I may have to wait for the trade paperback – which sucks. I like to get trades ONLY if I cannot get the single issues. I am very intrigued by the whole story.
DESTROYER
Destroyer was great as well. Robert Kirkman once again hits a home run. Cory Walker’s art is simple but detailed. I loved this book. A friend and I had a story concept just like this once but Kirkman does a better job at it than we ever could. Destroyer (or Mighty Destroyer as he was known) is an old Timely Comics character from back in the 1940s. The character is from around the same time period as Captain America.
From what I can gather about Destroyer - he is dying from cancer or some other fatal disease, and is taking down as many bad guys as he can before he dies. From what I can tell he is invulnerable.
In one scene some henchmen set up a bomb on top of a building. They have a guy who can teleport with them, but before they get the bomb set up Destroyer takes down their teleporter. The henchmen are left all alone on top of a skyscraper with a bomb, and nowhere to go. Then the two henchmen decide to throw the bomb off the roof before it explodes. Destroyer just grabs the two and jumps off with them in tow toward the bomb. Then BOOOOOM!!!!! All that’s left is Destroyer sitting unscathed on top of a car on the street waiting for the clean up crew to arrive.
Believe me you need to read this comic, but parents be warned this comic is for mature readers only. There is some foul language and violence, but it is a great read. That’s just book number one. I still need to get the rest of the series.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: REBORN
Captain America: Reborn is another great story that I am currently reading. Captain America is coming back and I am excited about it. Captain America is by far my favorite of all comic book characters. Always has been and will always will be.
After the events in Captain America #25 by writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting, Red Skull and a few other bad guys are trying to bring back Captain America. Why? So that the Red Skull can take over Captain America’s body and destroy everything that Captain America has ever fought for. The story is so complex and so great. I love what Ed Brubaker is doing with this character. Don’t get me wrong I love Bucky as the new Captain America but Steve Rogers will always be the one and only.
Issue number one of the story sets everything up. Sharon Carter explains a lot of what has been going on with her and how she is connected in bringing Captain America back. She tells Hank Pym about a machine that she was connected to that taps into time and space. Sharon Carter said she was referred to as the CONSTANT while attached to this machine. The gun Sharon Carter used to shoot Captain America is examined by Hank Pym who discovers that it was created by Doctor Doom, and that it contained a special bullet inside that would leave Captain America (or his spirit or what have you) trapped in time.
Later on in the issue we finally get to see Captain America. He is traveling through different periods of his lifetime. Jumping in and out of different moments that he has lived through. You see Captain America saving soldiers in World War II and on the beaches of Normandy and that is where it leaves off.
Once again I am ready for the rest of the story to unfold. I have read issue two already but that I will save for next time. By the way if you want to read this story I suggest you go to Hastings and pick it up.
So are you guys excited about the new Batman video game – “Batman: Arkham Asylum”? I played the demo on my buddy Floyd’s Playstation 3 a couple of weeks ago, and boy oh boy am I glad to see a good Batman game finally come out. I seriously hope that this game lives up to the hype that it has been getting lately. From what I could tell on the demo it is very in tune with the mythos of the character. Not to mention the fact that Kevin Conroy is back as Batman, and Mark Hamill is back as the Joker. A great team if you ask me. I loved their work on the animated Batman series from the early ‘90s. The game looks to have a lot of depth to it. Hopefully is will not be a short 10 hour game like so many are these days.
While we are on the subject of video games – I spent almost a whole weekend two weeks ago playing “Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes”. That’s right almost the whole weekend. My buddy Floyd once again brought over his Playstation 3 and we downloaded the game. If Floyd did not work on Saturdays then it would have been the whole weekend. We love that game that much. A roster of 56 characters is a lot to play through. Then you have all the combos and specials. It was crazy and hectic. If you have not bought this game yet then you are missing out on one of the classics. Trust me on this one.
Geez, I just keep going and going this week.
Okay now it’s time for my thoughts on the G.I. Joe film. First off, it was not bad, but it was not that great either. It was good, and a lot better than “Transformers 2” could have ever hoped to be. I wouldn’t recommend seeing it. “G.I. Joe” made for a good popcorn flick and of course seeing Snake Eyes on film was the best part about it. As I have said before I am not a film critic so with that said I am just going to leave it at – Recommended. Not necessarily a must see but worth it if you are looking for a good summer popcorn film. Now if I were still 13 then it would have been awesome. There was some casting issues that I had with the film but nothing too major. Overall it lived up to what it was supposed to be – a film about action figures.
I think that’s about it for this week, and I bet you guys are glad that I am finally shutting up huh! Until next time folks and remember –
