A swarm of ladies golfers will hit Dornick Hills Golf and Country Club today. Ninety-two to be exact.

The historic course will host its Ladies Golf Association Cliffhanger, which invites teams of two from around Texoma to compete in the one-day event. Two pairs each will tee off from holes 1-18 today at 8:45 a.m. Pairs are chosen by the players themselves.

The Cliffhanger will have four flights, ranging handicaps from three to 36.

“Generally, we have a cut-off of 48 teams,” tournament chairperson Elsie Estes said. “It’s an invite tournament, but we open it up to many clubs and send invitations over state lines. Some ask for individual invites and we also send invites to other ladies golf associations.”

Among those returning players is Estes, though she admits she’ll be among the players in the middle range.

“I’m not one of the better golfers out there,” she said, mentioning her 15 handicap.

Dornick Hills golf professional Steve Ramsey said the Oklahoma-to-Texas player ratio will run about “70-30 to 80-20.” Eleven of the 92 players hail from Ardmore.

The Cliffhanger is named for the signature 16th hole at Dornick Hills, of which Estes described as “difficult” to get up the trademark rock cliff to putt. The tournament festivities kicked off Tuesday with a charismatic tradition: the 30-team “Horserace” in which partners alternate shots from start to finish and picked their best drive off the tee to start.
