Mike Bailey: What kids can learn from Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods was a role model. He may not have considered himself one nor wanted to be one, but some things come with the territory.

Forget abut the fact that he is the world’s best golfer. Accepting sponsors' dollars and being the face of so many products is accepting the notion that you have a good moral compass and will do nothing to embarrass the corporations that invest in your image.

Tiger made some big mistakes recently, but his biggest one was getting married, and I think that this is what kids need to pay attention to.

He is a huge hit with young athletes, and his recent admissions of adultery have certainly sent another terrible message to a country full of kids who have witnessed divorce on a preposterous level.

I am not saying don’t get married. It can be a wonderful thing when done properly.

I am saying you must be absolutely sure that you are ready. By getting married, Tiger should have been 100 percent sure that he had found his correct partner and that he was ready to hold her to the highest regard and do absolutely nothing to embarrass her.

By tying the knot, Tiger should have been saying, "I acknowledge that I am extremely rich, powerful and will have many women almost throwing themselves at me for many more years, but I don’t care because I have found the one I want to be with and will resist all those temptations because of my love and respect for her."

Instead, his marriage appears a sham and a facade, and he looks as if he is using his wife, Elin, as someone to go home to for stability while he runs around with his crazy and secret life.

And then he had kids. Did he ever stop and think of what they would think of him if all of his affairs got exposed? They are young now, but of course they will find out in the future -- and that may be his toughest conversation yet.

If Tiger wanted this lifestyle and wanted to "take advantage" of his fame and fortune, then he should have stayed single -- ala Derek Jeter.

Jeter is doing very well in many aspects of life, if you know what I mean, and is never criticized for his actions. I am sure Jeter will marry someday, but it is clear he knows he is not ready and is enjoying the life he is living.

Marriage is not to be taken lightly. Tiger may very well love Elin, but I am fully convinced he knew that this infidelity would be an issue in his marriage beforehand and chose to ignore it. Now he has to listen to everyone’s opinion of him.

There is no timetable on when a person HAS to marry. Age or family pressure should never matter. If you choose never to marry that is your business. But if and when you decide to do so, you had better look yourself in the eyes and be ready for the trip.

You’re not on it alone anymore, and someone is counting on you to be a good person and use that moral compass again to its fullest capacity.

Tiger may have taught us a lot about what it means to be a champion on the golf course, but he has also shown us how a man is not supposed to be off it.

And that lesson can be way more important.
