Arrest warrants have been issued for the couple who allegedly shot a Texas man and carjacked his pickup Aug. 27 at an Interstate 35 scenic turnout in Murray County.
The OSBI said Friday Steven Scott Redmond and Mary Smith, also known as Mary Harris, were wanted on charges of robbery, assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill and auto theft.
Jessica Brown, OSBI spokeswoman, said Redmond, 48, should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Redmond has a three-decade criminal history in Texas that spans arrests and convictions for murder, robbery and cruelty to animals. Smith is described as a white woman in her 20s. She has a large tattoo of a panther on her lower right leg.
Redmond and the woman may still be hiding out in or around Ardmore, according to authorities.
The pair is accused of shooting Kevin Grimes during the early afternoon of Aug. 27 at the I-35 scenic turnout near mile marker 49. They then allegedly fled the area in the pickup they arrived at the crime scene in and took Grimes’ Dodge pickup, as well. The victim’s pickup was found a short time later, abandoned two miles away on an interstate ramp near the 47 mile marker.
Grimes, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the neck, was discovered by a passer-by shortly after the attack. Murray County Undersheriff Darryl McCurtain said at the time Grimes was conscious and alert and was able to give them a description of Redmond and Smith. He also described the pickup they were driving.
Grimes was air-lifted from the scene and taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, where he underwent surgery just hours later. (Grimes has since been released from the medical facility.)
The day after the shooting a witness surfaced, telling authorities he saw the couple and the victim at the scenic turnout, but left the area apparently just minutes before the shooting. He also gave lawmen a description of Redmond and Smith and details concerning their pickup.
The couple’s pickup was found abandoned Sept. 3 on a dirt road in Love County near I-35 Exit 24. OSBI agents had the vehicle moved to P&M Wrecker Service in Davis. On Friday, Brown said, agents “processed” the truck, going over it with “a fine tooth comb.”
At the same time the pickup was being examined for evidence, the identities of Redmond and Smith were released, along with the information arrest warrants had been secured. Authorities said the motive for the shooting-carjacking may have been robbery.
The OSBI is urging anyone who may have seen the couple or know of their whereabouts to call (800) 522-8017.
