Take Two Academy students Lina Washburn and Alice Matthews wanted to help earthquake victims.

So, they organized their own fundraising drive. The two, both from Ardmore, presented information about the earthquake at Ardmore middle and high schools and Take Two.

The presentation and drive included making T-shirts and posters, decorating collection cans with younger students, as well as preparing a speech.

“It shows us how to get out and communicate and organize things,” said Matthews, a junior.

The project is a part of the girls’ leadership class.

“Mr. (David) Jones started talking about the earthquake and told us about a (previous) fundraiser for the tsunami,” Matthews said.

Leadership is one of the semester electives offered at Take Two, and each class completes service projects.

“The last thing I want is for them to sit and talk about (leadership). Also, they work on social skills and communication skills,” teacher David Jones said.

Public speaking challenged Washburn, a senior.

“It’s good to me because I don’t ever get out and talk to people,” she said.

The two collected $365.11, which they gave to the Red Cross.

“We asked just for extra change,” Matthews said.

Overall, the girls enjoyed their work.

“You bless people and it comes back to you. I enjoyed helping kids who don’t have anything,” Matthews said.
