The Ardmore High School student council is looking to increase community involvement in the school.
“We want to get the community behind Ardmore High School,” student council president Patrick McSweeney said.
With this goal in mind, the group will host a bonfire 6:30 Thursday night in the field west of the tennis courts.
The bonfire will be a day before the football team faces Durant at home, with a playoff berth on the line.
“It’s a chance for the community to support our football team and school before our last home game,” McSweeney said.
Since Friday’s football game will be senior night, the student council plans to celebrate seniors at the bonfire.
“It’s not just about football. It’s about cheerleading, pom and band, and softball and cross country. It’s everybody that has helped the school in one way or another,” McSweeney said.
“It wouldn’t be what it is right now without every single one (of the seniors),” student council member Sonia Khan added.
The cheerleaders, pom squad and band will provide entertainment. There will also be songs that have to do with fire.
“We’re going to get loud and be proud,” McSweeney said.
The bonfire is open to all members of the Ardmore community.
“Usually it’s just people from the school, but we want everyone to come,” Khan said.
The students thought of the idea for a bonfire after hearing about bonfires the school used to have decades ago.
“We’re excited to do an event like this,” McSweeney said.
If the event is successful, the student council members hope to make it an annual event and possibly have one during DUDE Week in the spring.
“I’m hoping once Patrick gets it started, we can keep it going,” Khan, a sophomore, said.
The students also hope for a good community turnout.
“We just want to show the community that if they team up with us, we can do a lot of good things,” Khan said.
