At 2 p.m. on July 9, area youth will have the opportunity to build and fly hot air balloons at the Chickasaw Regional Library System Headquarters.

It’s all part of the Sonic Junior Balloonist Program, a two-hour workshop for 10- to 14-year-olds. Participants learn history, math and science by building and flying model hot air balloons made out of tissue paper.

Each student will construct and fly a 4-foot tall model hot air balloon. The lesson plan for the workshop was developed in conjunction with and approved by the Oklahoma Department of Education.

The local Sonic Drive-In generously provides the instructors and all materials needed to assemble the balloons.

“We are excited about the opportunity to bring the Sonic Junior Balloonist program to Ardmore. We feel certain that all participants will learn a little bit of science and have a whole lot of fun,” program coordinator Tom Libby said.

This program is free and open to the public but limited to 20 participants. Children need to sign up as soon as possible to reserve a position.

To ask questions about the workshop or to sign up, contact Youth Services Librarian Amber Carter at (580) 223-3164 or toll free at (888) 520-8103.

CRLS is located at 601 Railway Express in Ardmore.
