Ardmore man dies in crash

A late night crash on U.S. Highway 77 claimed the life of 30-year-old Floyd W. Smith Jr. Thursday.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the Ardmore man was behind the wheel of a 2005 Chevrolet  SUV about 10:45 p.m. five miles north of Springer. Smith failed to negotiate a curve, sending the SUV off the road. He overcorrected and the vehicle overturned and hit a fence. Smith, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown out of the SUV about 25 feet.

He was taken by ambulance to Mercy Memorial Health Center where he was pronounced dead from massive injuries.

Cody A. Pierce, 27, Ardmore, was identified as a passenger in the SUV. He refused treatment at the scene.
Cause of the crash was listed as unsafe speed on a curve.
