The Good Shepherd Community Clinic was gifted an ultrasound machine from Mercy Hospital to help with the clinic’s recently expanded services.
The ACUSON Sequois 512 Ultrasound is the newest addition to the clinic’s obstetrics services.
“We continue to be grateful of the partnerships and support of the medical community and Mercy Hospital in Ardmore in our efforts to build healthy people and now healthy babies,” said Teresa Myers, Good Shepherd executive director. “We are so excited we even added a teddy bear to our logo.”
In July, the clinic expanded their hours, services, and accepted forms of insurance. These new services included pediatrics, obstetrics and minor restorative dental services in an effort to better serve the community. The clinic also now accepts Medicare and Medicaid (SoonerCare).
Myers said the decision to begin accepting Sooner Care and Medicare primarily stemmed from the need to increase access to medical and dental services for children and pregnant women in Carter County. Myers said this is especially important because “Carter County is in a health professional shortage area.”
The Good Shepherd is a nonprofit charity clinic that relies heavily on grant money and community support to supply healthcare services to those who would not otherwise be able to afford it. Myers added that by adding Medicare and Sooner Care the clinic will have an additional revenue source that will help support the clinic in the services it provides.
Good Shepherd opened its doors in 1996 and started as a Tuesday night volunteer clinic operating out of a small rental house. Today, the clinic services more than 3,000 economically disadvantaged patients annually from Carter, Love, Marshall, Murray and Johnston counties.
“Access for pregnant women and children is limited,” Myers said. “In addition to medical services, the demand is great for pediatric dental. As we are preparing to expand our dental services to include preventative and minor restorative work, such as fillings, we are anticipating the program to be quite busy.”
Good Shepherd is located at 20 12th Ave NW, and is open Monday- Friday. For a list of the clinic’s new hours visit their website at buildinghealthypeople.org.
