Playing in their first football game of the season, the Ringling Blue Devils found the going tough as they dropped a 20-0 decision to the Minco Bulldogs Friday night at Rick Gandy Field.

The Bulldogs took advantage of the inexperienced Blue Devils to lead in total offense 230-138 in yards.

Minco held Ringling to just four first downs and just 10 yards rushing in 28 attempts.

Minco (2-1), and ranked No. 7 in Class A, took the lead in the first quarter when Daxton Williams scored on a 1-yard run to make it a 7-0 game.

The Bulldogs dominated along the line of scrimmage and took advantage of every mistake made by the Blue Devils.

“Minco is a good team, and that’s why they are ranked in the top ten,” Ringling coach Steve Justus said.

“Minco was smooth in their game play and execution. We did not do as well because we were working through first game situations that you learn to correct.”

“Minco was in their third game. So they had two 48-minute games on us in experience. Our players played hard, but we are working through some kinks in the process that we need to correct. They gave a solid effort.”

The Bulldogs scored on a 1-yard run by Cole Burchfield in the second quarter to put Minco up 13-0 at intermission.

With the running game stalling, the Blue Devils were forced to the air for some offense. Quarterback Sam VanBuskirk was 13 of 26 for 128 yards with one pick.

“The best thing about many of our mistakes is that they are correctable,” Justus said.

“We are a little behind with our first scheduled opponent cancelling out on us. So we will need to work hard to make up some time. We had the two scrimmages, and our starting offense only had a few dozen snaps to practice in live action prior to this game.

“I expect we will be able to get our situations corrected and bounce back to have a pretty good year,” Justus added. “The kids have a good attitude, and you can work with that.”

Minco added their third score in the third quarter when Daxton Williams hit Davon Johnson with a 2-yard scoring pass that made it a 20-0 game.

The Blue Devils (0-1) travel to Marietta to take on the 3-0 Indians this Friday night at McClain Stadium.

RHS will then play against Apache.
