The trashiest event in Ardmore is slated for this Saturday, but there are still slots available for anyone who wants to get involved.
The Ardmore Clean Team, a Facebook group for Ardmore citizens who are passionate about cleaning up litter, have joined forces with Ardmore Beautification Council and the Main Street Authority to organize Dash for Trash, a citywide clean-up competition.
Dash for Trash spokesperson Cheryl Key said Ardmore Clean Team was born out of some Facebook rants and a few tight friendships when Margaret Ward, who created the group, moved back to Ardmore a few years ago.
“(The litter) was just driving her crazy,” Key said. “On November 9th, she finally said ‘I’m going down to the corner of Broadway and Rockford Road and I’m cleaning up.’ There were maybe five or six of us that day.”
Today the group has about 440 members who swap tips, tally the time they spend cleaning and take pictures of their efforts. Key said they’ve been discussing how to put together an event like this for a few months. She said previous efforts to organize a citywide cleanup had fizzled out or ended with only a few volunteers showing up, so they decided to turn it into a competition.
The Dash for Trash will start at the Mill Street Garage at 10 a.m. Competitors should arrive before that time to get signed in, get supplies and review the rules.
Trash dashers will compete for cash, gift certificates for local businesses and other prizes in categories like smelliest piece of trash, most interesting piece of trash and most valuable item that was thrown away.Key said they’re also holding a scavenger hunt for certain pieces of trash, like cups and grocery bags from specific chains.
The hunt for garbage will end at noon, when participants will reconvene at the Mill Street Garage for judging and lunch supplied by Rib Crib. Key said about 70 people have signed up to participate so far, surpassing their original goal of 25.
Groups of about three people can form a team, pick a team name and compete together and single applicants can join a team on Saturday morning. Ardmore Clean Team will supply gloves, trash bags and trash grabbing tools. Sunscreen and bug spray are recommended.
To sign up, fill out an entry form at the Ardmore Beautification Council at 333 W. Main, Suite 160 or Ardmore Main Street Authority at 203 W. Main.
