Charles “Chuck” Aubrey Fitch, another member of “The Greatest Generation”, passed away September 13, 2017, at an Ardmore convalescent residence. Chuck was born October 14, 1924, in San Diego, Calif., the son of the late Edgar Graves and Bolvena Margaret (Jorgensen) Fitch, he was 92 years, ten months and twenty-nine days of age.
Following graduation from San Diego High School, Chuck enlisted in the U. S. Army on June 24, 1943, and attended Texas Tech University as an Aviation Cadet. He completed his cadet aviation training and received his wings on September 7, 1944. He joined the Army Air Corps on the following day. As a Flight Officer, he was trained to fly B-17 aircraft and amassed over 600 flying hours in all types of military aircraft. Chuck was honorably discharged from active duty February 23, 1946.
While stationed at the Ardmore Army Airfield, Chuck met Helen Wanda Lively, and following a whirlwind romance, they were married December 27, 1945 at the First Methodist Church in Ardmore.   The parents of three sons, Charles David, Paul Alan and Mark Keith, they had been married fifty years when Helen passed away, January 14, 1996.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Paul Alan Fitch; his grandson, David Bradley Churchfield Fitch; his sisters Ada and Alberta; and brothers John and Nelson.
A member of the First United Methodist Church of Ardmore, Charles worked for Lumberman’s Millwork and Supply as mill superintendent and general manager before he retired. He was a charter member of the Air Force Association and a member of the Military Memorial Museum located at the Greater Southwest Historical Museum. Chuck enjoyed gardening and woodworking, often giving away his homemade jams, jellies and garden vegetables in handmade wooden containers as well as exhibiting at the Carter County Free Fair where he won many first place ribbons.
Chuck is survived by sons, Charles David Fitch and his wife, Catherine, of Houston, and Mark Keith Fitch of Oklahoma City; grandsons, Charles Ashley Ragsdale Fitch of Houston, Grayson Leggett Parrish Fitch and his wife, Kristi; a great-granddaughter, Presley Elizabeth Fitch, of The Woodlands, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
