SPRINGER — It’s often been said you can always go home.

SPRINGER — It’s often been said you can always go home.

However for the past year, the Springer basketball teams haven’t had a home to call their own.

At 6:30 p.m. Friday night though, the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals will finally be able to dribble a basketball at home.

Milburn will join in to make history as the first team to visit the new Walker Gym, as Springer will look to open its new gym on a winning note.

“Last year was very difficult and trying on everyone,” Lady Cardinals coach Traci Dragg said. “We’re so thankful for the community passing the bond to improve the facilities on campus. We’re hoping this gives us a chance to host a district tournament this season.”

Aside from the new found confidence of having a home gymnasium, the Lady Cardinals will also be returning multiple players this season.

“Madison Mapp, is our only senior this year, and she’s our post player,” Dragg said. “We’ve also got Kamryn Sampson along with Kailee Lathum and Alle Schmidt coming back for us. We’ve got high expectations for this season, and we feel we’re going to be very competitive in our conference.”

The feeling is also just as special for the Cardinals, who will also be making their season debut Friday night.

“We’re excited to finally get a home game,” Cardinals coach Caleb Fulton said. “This gym is something we’re very proud of. We’re proud of how hard our teams are working, and we’re just expecting to constantly improve.”
