William Robert “Bill” Smith, 93, passed away on Nov. 19, 2017 at the Ardmore Veterans Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017 at New Covenant Fellowship Church with Brother Bill Freeman officiating. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

William was born on Jan. 15, 1924 to William Lafayette Smith and Mable (Burrows) Smith in Shawnee. Bill moved from Shawnee to Le Flore, Okla., where he married his childhood sweetheart, Othell Wonderline Smith. They had a short-term marriage of only 72 and a half years! Bill joined the Army in 1943 until 1945. After his service, he worked for the Rock Island Railroad for a few years and then farmed in southeastern Oklahoma. Later, he worked for the Ammunition Department in McAlester as an investigator. From there, he moved to Ada and then to Ardmore. While in Ardmore, Bill worked for the Army Reserve 4003 until he went to work for the Internal Revenue Service in 1980. He retired from the IRS at the age of 55.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one daughter, Judy Arlene Stepp.

William is survived by his son, Larry Don Smith, of Ardmore, six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
