Finding a safe ride home on New Year’s is a little bit easier thanks to an annual public service.
AAA Oklahoma’s Tipsy Tow program will get anyone in Ardmore home safely, no questions asked, until 4 a.m. Tuesday morning. The service is also available in Tulsa, metropolitan Oklahoma City, Lawton, Ardmore, Tahlequah, Shawnee, Enid, Muskogee and Bartlesville. AAA senior specialist for public and government affairs Mark Madeja said the service is the company’s way of trying to prevent tragedy during a potentially dangerous time of year.
“Our goal is to keep people safe,” Madeja said.
Anyone who finds themselves without a ride and too impaired to drive can call 1-800-222-4357. AAA will send a tow truck to take callers home, which is free as long as the destination is within a 15-mile radius. Callers do not need to be AAA members.
Madeja said this service does not take reservations, and should be used as more of a failsafe for people who find themselves with no safe way home at the end of the night.
“This is more like ‘Oh, I was just going to have one beer, but suddenly we’ve had four shots, I’m toast and I need a way home, otherwise I could make a very bad decision.’” Madeja said. “Give us a call, we will get you home safely.”
County Sheriff Chris Bryant said everything else aside, responsible drinking is still the best way to stay safe during the holidays.
“I would definitely make sure you have a designated driver, or if you’re traveling, make sure that if you drink too much, you can stay put,” Bryant said.
