DICKSON — With a strong defensive effort, the Lone Grove Lady Horns left zero doubt against Dickson Friday night, rolling past the Lady Comets 54-29 from the Dickson Gymnasium.

Unlike their previous matchup, where Clary Donica led a massive fourth quarter rally before the Lady Comets fell late to the Lady Horns 54-47, the Lady Horns defense kept Dickson and Donica out of sorts.

“We locked them (Dickson) up pretty good,” Lone Grove coach Jeff Word said.

“Fortunately for us, Donica got in foul trouble early and I don’t think she ever got in a good rhythm. But we played good defense on her and did a lot of switching and doubling up to get the ball out of her hands. I was really proud of our girl’s defensive effort. It’s what you have to do on the road to win.”

Both teams struggled offensively to start the game.

Clary Donica’s offensive rebound and put-back four minutes after tip-off took the lid off the basket, but the lead wouldn’t last long as Lone Grove outscored the Lady Comets 10-7 in the first quarter.

Lone Grove ramped things up in the second quarter, limiting Dickson to just 4 points to build a 24-11 halftime-lead.

In the third quarter, Lone Grove put the game out of reach, taking a 35-15 lead into the fourth.

Both offenses opened up in the fourth quarter, with Dickson nearly doubling their output from the first three quarters, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Lydia Saavedra led the Lady Horns in scoring with 14 points.

Taleigh Nail scored 12 points and Madison Anderson added eight points in the win.

Despite getting in early foul trouble, Clary Donica led Dickson (6-7) with 11 points.

Jadyn Williams scored five points and Sienna Young added four points.

“I think we made a pretty good statement, we’re handing the basketball better and we’re executing things,” Word said.

“I couldn’t ask for anything better, especially on the road and over here.”
