Veterans and first responders will take to the skies on Saturday.
This weekend, the Oklahoma chapter of the nonprofit Casualties of War will hold their second Hogs, Heroes and Helos event in Marietta. Leading up to the event, the group took nominations for first responders and veterans who will get a chance to hunt hogs from a helicopter.
Casualties of War is a national organization that works to support those suffering from PTSD and their families. Organizer Zack Brown said the event will start on Friday and run all weekend.
“Last year we had about 150 to 200 people show up,” Brown said. “We have volunteers that come out as well as people just showing up to support the veterans.”
The weekend will kick off with a dinner in honor of veterans and first responders at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at The Ven event center on Main Street in Marietta. The venue can house about 150 guests and tickets are still on sale.
On Saturday, teams of vets and first responders, five from Oklahoma and five from Texas, will go head to head in a helicopter hog hunt that will last from 10 a.m. to dusk. The helicopter will take off from Loves Valley Road, east of Marietta. The Texas team won last year’s event.
On Sunday, the participants and sponsors will face off in a skeet shootout and a machine gun course at Battle Springs Ranch.
“We had a good turnout last year,” Brown said.
