However, the No. 11 Healdton Bulldogs made it look simple on Thursday afternoon in the opening game of the Jake Leffler Memorial Wood Bat tournament against Velma-Alma.

Healdton exploded for 13 runs in the first inning as the Bulldogs won comfortably 19-3 in three innings at Jake’s Field. 

Velma-Alma managed to grab two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Bulldogs were in no mood for a comeback attempt as they kept the offensive pressure up with two runs in the top of second inning.

The Bulldogs finished off the game with four runs in the top of the third inning, before the Comets snagged one more run to finish the game.

Devin Chancellor led Healdton on the day going 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and five total RBI.

Denton Miller went 2-for-2 with four runs scored and three RBI for Healdton, while Dayton Potts was 1-for-3 with a run scored also earning three RBI.

Matt Choate, Kolton Cox, and Ethan Barnes all collected a pair of RBI’s in the game for the Bulldogs.

Zac Benton also had an RBI for Healdton while going 2-for-3 at the plate with four runs scored.

Benton got the win on the mound for the Bulldogs in the game, throwing 1 2/3 innings of work. He allowed two earned runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Wade Etter threw 1 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on zero hits with two walks and two strikeouts. 

Healdton will play Marietta today in the second round of the tournament at Jake’s Field in Velma. 

Ringling and Wilson are among the other local teams competiting in the tournament who will also play today.
